President's Message
Dear
Garden Family,
Thank
you for the great honor to serve you as the President. I would like to take this
as an opportunity to thank the outgoing officers for their outstanding
contributions and hard work. I would like to welcome and thank all the new
officers as they contribute their time and talents to serve our wonderful club.
As
another new year begins and the weather is ready to warm up, I know all of us
just can't wait to get our hands dirty in our gardens. Every
garden and every year is unique. So wherever your gardening whims take you this
year, I wish you success, inspiration and gratification!
I
am pleased to say that we are on the way to an exciting year for the club, with
all of our members readily planning and organizing gardening events and fun
activities for each month.
We have started planning some of the activities at our January meeting, and I am
hoping that, as a team, we will continue to plan more as the months progress.
There
are many projects, workshops and field trips on our agenda for this year. We
are going to make each club meeting a gardening and learning experience. Whether
we are trying to learn the skills of flower arrangements, propagation methods,
decoupaging/antiquing pots, native gardening or just visiting Mother Nature in
the form of field trips, we are going to have a wonderful year!
We will also have our Member Garden Tours, when we walk through our
members' gardens and share our gardening experiences with each other.
I
encourage each of you to share your love of gardening with your neighbors and
friends, and encourage them to come and see what we do.
Here's
to a great 2006 – a year of sharing, learning and having fun together!

Gardening Tips From Your Master Gardener
Fuchsias, Pruning: The last part of February is the time to prune
fuchsias. There may be some frost damage so prune that out. Also take off some
of last summer's growth. Leave at least two or three healthy leaf buds on each
branch. Fuchsias have a tendency to get leggy. Frequently pinch the tips of the
branches during the spring and summer to force side growth, making the fuchsia
bushier. Pick off flowers as they fade. Check out the American
Fuchsia Society's website for more information.
Pruning Hydrangeas: Remove old brittle canes on hydrangeas.
Leave young canes with flower buds attached. Hydrangeas bloom on the new year's
growth. Unlike hydrangeas, wait to prune camellias, forsythia, lilac,
quince and other ornamental spring flowering shrubs until they finish blooming.
More information about hydrangeas is on the American
Hydrangea Society website.
Moss on Cement: Try Hydrated lime.
Quick Pruning Tip: If you
want to have a neat, sheared hedges, prune them back lightly three times a year.
St. Patricks Day, Mother's
Day (or close to it) and July 4th.
You won't be left with unsightly scars.
Trees, Patios and Small Spaces: Non aggressive root system, no messy
fruit, small size, relatively free from pests, and pretty are some of the things
to look for. Some examples are Japanese Maple, Chinese Pistacio (male), White or
Pink Hybrid Crape Myrtle, Tollenson's Weeping Juniper, Flax-leaved Paperbark,
and Canadian Redbud.

Prune during dormant season/winter to invogorate or encourage fruit bud and spur development. Prune in summer to groom and control shape. Prune now! Apply dormant spray before buds open to control overwintering scale, mealy bugs, white flies and mites. Anyone can grow fruit trees even with limited space! All you need is an area that gets full sun. For small speace3s you can espalier, hedge-grow, multi-graft, or use pots. Plant two, three, or four trees as close as 18" apart (this is called "hole in one"). It is best to plant the same species with different varieties with the "hole in one" technique. To get the best selection of the right fruit for your garden, attend a fruit tasting offered by some orchard growers. Here's one grower that offers fruit tasting: http://www.andysorchard.com . Maybe a fruit tasting would be a fun club activity.
Happy Valentine's Day

Planning Meeting - November 6, 2004 at Vicki Rasmussen's house. Welcome new member: Dee Castagnoli Not present? Kathy Roessler, Virginia Yenter, Ruth Eastman. We miss you all. Vicki gave us a good demonstration on garland making. Susie and Sally went home with a beautiful garland. Discussions:
- Thank you note from Gladys Naman.
To members of the evergreen Garden Club, I truly enjoyed the time we spent together?.. Strolling thru my garden while sharing gardening stories. What made it so special was knowing that our appreciation of trees and plants was mutual. I do so appreciate your most generous gift, and I thank you ,?. But please know that no gift is necessary for pleasure equally shared. I?m looking forward to a possible spring celebration with the Evergreen Garden Club members. Warmest regards, Gladys Naman
- Our treasurer, Marti reimbursed Laura for the $35.00 gift certificate for Gladys Naman.
- There had been some publicity of our club in the Evergreen Times and in the Community News section of San Jose Merc. News. To date we only had a couple of inquiries about our club. This could be due to error of our web address in the Evergreen Times.
- Beginning January 2005, our meetings will be held at the new Evergreen Valley High School on Quimby Road. Thanks to Susie, we will be using her classroom with the permission of the school. In Exchange, we will need to do some type of garden project for the school. We will be meeting at the school in February to decide what we can do. Sally also made contact with the Evergreen Community Center on San Felipe Road that could also be a possible meeting place as a back up. It was decided that our meeting will be on the last Saturday of each month.
- Sally shared a couple of organizations that we should be aware of. Organic Seed Alliance (http://www.seedalliance.org) It is all about sharing seeds; researching seeds, and it?s about preserving heirloom seed stock ? a vital and increasingly important alternative to genetically engineered seeds. Open-pollinated seeds, the heirlooms of our grandparents grew, can be grown to seed and replanted, year after year, with some assurance of the same yields and crops.
http://www.invasive.org a good reference for plants to avoid in our garden. They have a good list of invasive plants in your garden listed by region.
- Trip to Ron?s Nursery in Cambria scheduled for Dec. 4-5 has been cancelled.
- December 4 at 10:00 we will be making Christmas Garland at Vicki?s house. If you wish to participate, bring with you a paddle wire (24? gauge), clippers, collect lots of leaves, berries, pines, eucalyptus, or other greens you that you think will work. $10.00 for the cost of other greens/ ropes that Vicki will purchase for us. It will be helpful if you take a measurement of the space where your garland will go. Please confirm your attendance with Vicki (vrasmussen@aol.com) so she?ll know how much to purchase. Once you made the commitment and do not show up, Vicki will still need to be reimbursed for the material she will purchase.
- It is confirmed that December 15 at 7:00 pm will be our Christmas party at Marti?s house. We will do potluck. Bring your favorite food to share. We will have our usual Christmas gift exchange (garden related items). Cost between $15-$20. Will also be electing (or assigning) our new officers. Here are the positions that we may want to think about and discuss in December:
- President... will run the meetings
- Secretary? will keep minutes of all meetings, events, all records of the club and work with the Web Master to keep the web site up to date.
- Historian?. Take photos of events, field trips, keep a record of our activities and also work with the web master posting photos in our web site.
- Treasurer?. Handle all financial affairs of the club, keep an accurate record of receipts and disbursements and make a monthly report to the club.
- Field Trip coordinator? Plan and arrange all field trips.
- Community Service/Project coordinator? the contact person for any community service the club chooses to do.
